A note on PRECIPICE

By: Natasha Poon Woo, Rehearsal Director of Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre (CCDT)

This past October I had the honour of accompanying 14 of our young company dancers and apprentices to New York City, where CCDT proudly took to The Joyce Theater’s stage to perform excerpts from The Winged at the José Limón International Dance Festival. We were the youngest troupe (with dancers ranging from ages 11 to 18) and the sole Canadian representative in the festival. CCDT’s dancers performed Limón’s 1966 masterpiece, The Winged, ending with a standing ovation.

It thrills me that we now have the opportunity to share this work here in Toronto, part of PRECIPICE, where a new audience can experience the maturity, technical skill, and artistic integrity while these young dancers tackle this iconic modern dance (created more than 35 years before most of them were even born).

PRECIPICE, part of Harbourfront Centre NextSteps series, will also feature Artistic Director Deborah Lundmark’s world premiere of Rain Horse, performed to the live music of award-winning harmonica player Carlos del Junco and his trio, The Blues Mongrels.

As well Hanna Kiel unveils her world premiere of The Gift, with powerful music by Greg Haines and Orphan Swords. Kiel takes an ensemble of nine dancers through a physical and emotional journey, exploring the relationship each of us shares with the universe. Furthermore, UK-based Alexander Whitley will perform Vectors and Colin Connor, the new Artistic Director of New York’s José Limón Dance Company, returns with his outstanding piece ARENA.

PRECIPICE opens on May 27 and runs until the 28th, part of NextSteps, at the Fleck Dance Theatre. Tickets are available at the Harbourfront Centre’s Box Office.
